A Milwaukee County sheriff's deputy acted lawfully when he fatally shot a motorist at Milwaukee's crowded lakefront in June 2017, the District Attorney's office announced Wednesday.
Dep. Michael Truax was standing in the median along Lincoln Memorial Drive at the intersection with East Water Tower Road when Terry Wiliams, 19, veered toward him. Williams had fled from a traffic stop minutes earlier as he left the Bradford Beach parking area.>

Chief Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern concluded that Truax acted in lawful self-defense and defense of others, and therefore his use of deadly force was justified under Wisconsin law.
Truax, who has been on administrative duty since the incident, fired eight shots toward Williams in three seconds, according to Lovern's letter, addressed to outgoing Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt.>

The Waukesha County Sheriff's Office investigated the shooting, but Truax delayed making a statement, which led to the lengthy delay on a decision as to whether should face criminal charges, Lovern said.
Williams died of a head wound. A passenger in his custom-painted Audi Q7 was wounded.
Williams family has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the county, which is pending.
