TIME magazine has released its 14th annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, including entertainers Ryan Reynolds, Ed Sheeran and James Corden.
According to TIME editor-in-chief Nancy Gibbs, this year’s list “explores the intersection of accomplishment and renown.” She explains, “Many of the men and women on this year’s list are calling us out, using the technologies that connect us to expand how we see the world.”
For Reynolds, it’s the “Deadpool” star’s “wit, elegance, looks and general hunkiness” that has landed him on the list, as his “Woman in Gold” co-star Helen Mirren explains. “He can balance his private and public life with great dexterity,” the actress says. “He is open and generous, but never inappropriate. I suspect this is part of what makes him such an appealing performer.”
Reynolds responded in typical smart-aleck fashion, issuing a tweet proclaiming his surprise at making the list and thanking Mirren for the kind words while admitting his real name is “Summershank Melon-Wad.”

Speaking about her good friend, Sheeran, Taylor Swift recalls a time when the singer doubted he would ever win a Grammy award, only to later win the 2016 Song of the Year for “Thinking Out Loud.” She says, “His reaction to any idea that fails is to almost immediately come up with a new one. He’s a fighter who pops back up on his feet before you even noticed he’d been knocked down.”
Meanwhile, Elton John praises “The Late Late Show” host: “James is one of the most hardworking and talented people you will ever meet. But that alone doesn’t explain his extraordinary success. Anyone – friends and fans alike – can tell you that James doesn’t take himself, or others, too seriously. And that’s why he’s able to make us laugh, cry and sing – sometimes all at once.”
Other artists named in this year’s TIME 100 list include Emma Stone, Colson Whitehead, Alicia Keys, Donald Glover, Leslie Jones, Ben Platt, Ava DuVernay, Barry Jenkins, Margot Robbie, Sarah Paulson, John Legend, Alessandro Michele, Kerry James Marshall, and Demi Lovato.
Featured on the five worldwide covers are TIME 100 members Viola Davis, John Legend, Jeff Bezos, Melinda Gates, and Riz Ahmed. See the five covers below.
